Herbert William Levin

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Herbert William Levin, 88, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away on Dec. 21, 2017. Memorial services celebrating Herb's life will be held in March, 2018, at the National Cemetery in Sarasota, Fla., with full military honors.

Herb was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., on March 4, 1929. He was the son of the late Carl and Lucille Levin.

He was a graduate of Sault High School and served with the Sault National Guard bridge building company during the Korean War. He later was reassigned by the Army as a war correspondent during the Korean War for Stars and Stripes. Following his discharge from the Army, Herb was reorganized back to the National Guard unit in Sault Ste. Marie.

As a retired newspaper executive, his journalism career spanned more than four decades in the Upper Peninsula daily newspapers and he retired as publisher and vice-president of the Ironwood Daily Globe, located in Ironwood, Mich.

Previously, he served as editor and general manager of the Sault Ste. Marie Evening News for more than 30 years. He joined the Evening News as a sports editor and anchored a twice daily sports broadcast with WSOO radio station in Sault Ste. Marie.

His interest in journalism led to his presidency of the Michigan Press Association and president of the Michigan Associated Press Managing Editors Association.

Active in community affairs, he served as president of the Sault Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the military affairs committee and member of the International Bridge Authority. He served as chairman of the city recreation commission and secretary of the Sault Indians, a professional hockey team. He was a director of the Central Savings Bank in the Sault. He also served various chamber and industrial commission positions in Ironwood.

He retired to Florida and enjoyed the beaches and was an avid golfer with family and friends. A dedicated father, brother, grandfather and uncle, Herb is missed dearly by all who are proud to have been part of his life.

Herb is survived by his wife, Georgia, son Herb and his wife, Tammy, daughter, Kim, and grandson, Michael; brothers, Roy and Donald, and sister, Ethel.
