Ironwood warming trend extends through Friday

IRONWOOD - Enjoy it while it lasts.

After a brutal first week of January, warmer than normal temperatures returned over the weekend to the Gogebic Range. No one was complaining about the bright Monday sunshine and upper 20s temperatures.

The high of 25 degrees for the 24-hour period to 7 a.m. Monday at the Gogebic-Iron Wastewater Treatment Plant on the Montreal River was 5 degrees above the normal long-term high. The low of 12 for the period was well above the daily average of 4 degrees over the past 118 years.

The record monthly average low as of Jan. 8 is the minus-13 degree reading set in 1912.

As of Monday, the average temperature for Ironwood in January stood at 1.2 degrees, compared to the long-term norm of 12.3 degrees.

Snowfall for the month stands at 15.3 inches, above the average of 10.8 inches. The on the ground snow total is 19 inches.

The warming trend is forecast to extend through Friday, when sub-zero weather will likely return.

Wednesday's high is predicted at 37 degrees, with a low of only 28.

There's a possibility of a snowstorm on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service, which predicts another warming trend will return after the cold weekend readings.
