George R. Kerkes

OMA, Wis. - George R. Kerkes, 83, of Oma, passed away at home on March 17, 2018 after a long illness. He was born on Feb. 2, 1935 to Ann and Gazy Kerkes.

He attended St. Ambrose Grade School and graduated from St. Ambrose High School in 1953. He served with honor in the U.S. Navy and the Michigan National Guard. After graduating from Northland College in 1967, he taught elementary education at local schools for over 30 years. On Feb. 24, 1968 he married the former Patricia Williams at St. Ambrose Church and she survives him.

A very kind and compassionate man, he loved his family and being with them. He especially enjoyed weekends at "The Cabin" on Chaney Lake and family fishing vacations at Cisco Lake Resort.

Survivors include his wife, a son Mark and his wife Amber Kerkes of Wakefield, Mich., and a daughter Jennifer at home. Also surviving are brothers, James Kerkes and Thomas Kerkes, sisters-in-law Marge Kerkes and Marlene Kerkes, Sue, Caruso and Sally Kinsly as well as many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, John, Joseph and William Kerkes and nephews Michael Kerkes and Greg Kerkes, and sister-in-law Lynn Kerkes.

Visitation for George will be on Monday, March 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 404 Iron Street in Hurley. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday at 11 a.m. at the church with Fr. Frank Kordek, O.F.M. officiating.
