Bessemer — The Gogebic County Board of Commissioners Wednesday approved $2,500 scholarships to 61 area high school senior students.

The Dr. Steven Fortunato Dal Pra and Colleen Dal Pra awards will go to half of the area high school seniors, as follows:

—Ironwood, 30 out of a class of 59.

—Wakefield-Marenisco, 11 out of a class of 22.

—Watersmeet, four out of a class of eight.

—Bessemer, 14 out of a class of 27.

—Community Schools, two out of a class of four.

While the board approved the number of scholarships it will award, it will approve individual students’ applications at its April 25 regular meeting.

At a recent scholarship awards committee meeting, it was reported the trust had earned $104,704 in interest for 2017.

Total scholarship awards this year are for $152,500.

The scholarship fund was set up after the Dal Pra family was killed in a crash of a small airplane near the Gogebic-Iron Counties Airport in Ironwood Township.

In public comment Wednesday, Erwin Township Supervisor Larry Grimsby said he was pleased county equalization director Kathy Koval attended an Erwin Township tax session.

“It’s good to have a team concept, with the county willing to work with the township,” said Grimsby.

He also briefly discussed embezzlement cases in the county, saying when people are sworn in to do a job, they must uphold the law.
