Finalists for Ironwood superintendent job announced

IRONWOOD — The five finalists being interviewed to be the next superintendent of the Ironwood Area Schools were announced Tuesday.

The list features several with past experience as superintendents, as well as at least two with ties to the local region.

The district has scheduled interviews with Martha Hasselbusch, a former superintendent with the South Central Local Schools in Parma, Ohio; Travis Powell, principal of Lake Superior Elementary School in Ashland, Wis .; Christopher Schultz, the former superintendent of the Luck School District in Luck, Wis .; Alan Tulppo, the Ewen-Trout Creek Consolidated Schools superintendent and Walter Byington, who was a superintendent in Branson, Colo., and now teaches in Fulton.

The interviews will take place over three days, starting Monday. The board will then decide whether a second round of interviews is necessary, or whether it has settled on a candidate to replace Tim Kolesar as superintendent.

In December, Kolesar announced he was retiring at the end of the school year, having served as superintendent since 2010.
