Ironwood — The Ironwood Area Schools will be able to purchase new buses and make necessary upgrades to the Luther L. Wright K-12 School after voters within the district’s boundaries voted 59 percent to 41 percent to approve a five-year millage in Tuesday’s election.

“On behalf of the staff, students and families of the Ironwood Area Schools, I would like to thank the community for supporting our school by passing this important bond proposal,” Ironwood Superintendent Travis Powell said Tuesday night. “With the passing of this bond, Ironwood Area Schools will be able to upgrade our busing fleet, modernize and ensure the long life of our elevator, improve the comfort and energy efficiency of our building, and replace or upgrade important classroom technology for our teachers and students. The generosity and thoughtfulness of the community are greatly appreciated.”

The five-year millage will allow the district to borrow up to $735,000. The estimated amount expected to be levied in 2019 is .71 mill, according to the ballot language, with an average annual millage rate over the measure’s five-year life span of 1.02 mills.

One mill translates to $1 per every $1,000 of taxable value.

The measure passed by a total 1,120-768 in the three communities — the city of Ironwood, Ironwood Township and Erwin Township — the district serves. While the total vote was enough to carry the day, the measure did fail in Erwin Township.

Voters in Ironwood voted 678 to 431 in favor of the measure, it passed in 402-277 Ironwood Township and Erwin Township rejected the measure with 60 no votes to 40 yes votes.
