IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP — The Ironwood Township Board of Trustees approved a 2015 proposed budget of $913,729 Dec. 8. The fund balance for 2015 is $398,371, down nearly $100,000 from 2014. The millage rate will remain at 4.2714 after residents approved a road millage during the November mid-term election. A millage rate is the amount of tax per $1,000 of property value, the road millage replaced an expiring fire truck millage. The millage is for 1 mill and will last from 2014 to 2018. HURLEY - The Iron County Finance Committee Thursday approved moving forward with aerial imaging of the county in 2015. Zoning administrator Tom Bergman discussed imaging, saying it is part of a consortium effort in northern Wisconsin. The plan is a for a plane to fly over using orthophotography, which uses lasers to measure the exact contours of the surface below. HURLEY - Hundreds of toys were dropped off at the Iron County Human Services Department on Tuesday afternoon, as part of the annual Christmas for Kids toy drive in Iron County. The drive is hosted by the Iron County Fire Association, and allows people to bring donations to their local fire halls. IRONWOOD - Nearly 1,000 local children from Iron, Gogebic and Ontonagon counties attended performances of "Once Upon A Wolf" at the Historic Ironwood Theatre on Tuesday. GURNEY, Wis. - Santa Claus made an early visit Saturday to begin the Christmas season at the eighth annual Gurney Gopher 4-H Club's pie social in Gurney. About 20 children, ranging in ages for newborn babies to older kids, were able to sit on Santa's lap and tell him what they wanted this holiday. BESSEMER - Hundreds of elementary students and their parents celebrated Thanksgiving a little early Tuesday with a Thanksgiving feast at Washington Elementary School in Bessemer. It was the first time the school held the feast. First grade teacher Emily Stafford had held similar meals at her old school in North Carolina. HURLEY - Over the last 13 months, Iron County residents have been able to receive free supplemental food through Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank, of Duluth, Minn., and the Iron County University of Wisconsin-Extension office. In October 2013, the mobile food pantry served 129 low-income individuals with protein, fruit, vegetables and grains. MERCER, Wis. - More than 30 residents braved cold temperatures and snowy conditions to dine on an early Thanksgiving meal at the Mercer School on Monday. For the last five years, a Thanksgiving meal has been provided for local senior citizens for free to help them get into the holiday spirit. HURLEY - Local residents braved cold temperatures to browse hundreds of homemade items during the second annual winter craft fair at the Iron County Memorial Building on Saturday. WAKEFIELD - Three food pantries in Ironwood, Bessemer and Watersmeet, were given thousands of pounds of food during a recent food drive by the Michigan State Police Wakefield Post.
