    Ian Minielly|Apr 4, 2017

BESSEMER — The Bessemer City Council moved through many items on the agenda Tuesday, but those results were overshadowed twice by heated discussions about which city officials are truly looking out for the city. The most contentious of the two was during the Public Comment section at the end of the meeting. Board member Rob Coleman said he had been denied an agenda item. Coleman described some law enforcement issues and hearsay regarding the proponents of medical marijuana and culminated with his displeasure of city attorney Mike Korpula’s per...

    Ian Minielly|Mar 18, 2017

IRONWOOD - Last Saturday, Gary Engstrom of Ironwood finished the Calumet Great Bear Chase cross country ski race naked and prone, registering a fourth place finish in his age bracket. That's pretty good for someone who is 70 years old and had been clinically dead for 10 minutes. Most people would get arrested for finishing a race naked, but Engstrom, who was carried across the line like a true king in the prone position, was given a free pass. Engstrom's clothes had been cut off by emergency...

    Ian Minielly|Mar 4, 2017

HURLEY — The Aging Unit of Iron County Board of Directors discussed a resolution regarding its status on Friday. Would it cease to exist as a nonprofit and become a county entity as it was under the false impression it was mandated to do, or would it remain a nonprofit with closer ties to the county for oversight, or become part of a sub-department of a county department, like Human Resources? Those were the three options available to the board as laid out by Mark Marczak, executive director of the aging unit. At the conclusion of the Feb. 2...

    IAN MINIELLY|Feb 9, 2017

WAKEFIELD TOWNSHIP - Wakefield Township Supervisor John Cox informed the Daily Globe the town board on Tuesday voted to leave the Western Gateway Trail Authority. He said the move was made because the township does not include any part of the trail. Cox said township officials brought up the fact there is no funding mechanism for trail maintenance and that is a sticking point made repeatedly. Township officials feel there is no reason for them to pay for Ironwood and Bessemer's trail, when they...

IRONWOOD - As Ironwood gears up for an influx of snowmobile racers for the next few weeks, Tom Auvinen and crew are busy making ice and preparing the track. Without the ice-makers and hay bale layers, there would be no racing in Ironwood, but for Auvinen and crew, they are fine with the racers receiving all the attention.
