    To the Editor: Once again, the community has demonstrated its caring spirit with generous donations to the Iron County Food Pantry and Treasure Room from individuals, businesses and organizations, not only in days approaching the holidays, but throughout the year. The volunteers at the pantry are truly gratified to have been able to provide nourishing food each month in 2014 to more than 150 families in Iron County.     IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. - John Clifford Nyman, 81, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2015, at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain. He was born Oct. 20, 1933, in Bessemer, to Vienna and Clifford Nyman. John entered U.S. Army service in May 1953 and served in Korea during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in May 1955.     PHOENIX, Ariz. — Sharon L. Chavez, 56, of Phoenix, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015, at the Hospice of the Valley, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. Sharon was born Jan. 14, 1958, in Myrtle Beach, Ore., daughter of the late George and Janet (Dobson) Sworab. She attended school in Bessemer and Ramsay, Mich., graduated from A.D.     HURLEY - Twelve days into the new year, Monica and Justin Colassaco, of Hurley, welcomed a son, Easton Thomas, the first baby born in 2015 at Aspirus Grand View Hospital in Ironwood. "It was surprising," Monica said of Easton being the first of 2015. "I was thinking on Jan. 12, there had to a couple born by then."     Remember those predictions a few years back that the price of gas might reach $5 to $6 a gallon in the United States by 2015? Those predictions are proving to be hollow as a gallon was selling for $1.99 at many northern Wisconsin and Upper Peninsula locations on Friday. While Hurley and Ironwood stations were at $1.99, the lowest local price was $1.92 at Lac du Flambeau, according to gasbuddy.com, which tracks gas prices throughout the nation.
