Veterans and their families have been invited to upcoming veterans town halls in Gogebic and Iron (Wis.) counties March 12-13. The meetings will be hosted by officials from the Oscar G. IRONWOOD — Aspirus Hospital in Ironwood is using remote technology to offer patients expanded access to physicians. David Sim, manager of marketing and public relations for Aspirus, said it’s not always easy for the hospital to find enough doctors to work in the area. “It’s hard for rural communities to compete with such high demand,” he said. “Everybody wants more providers.” Telehealth addresses this problem by allowing doctors to live anywhere in the world, but work where they are most needed. BAYFIELD, Wis. — National Park Service officials based in Bayfield announced Friday that the ice caves along the Lake Superior shore near Meyers Beach remain closed. The NPS ice team checked conditions Thursday. Two distinct sheets of ice were found, according to a press release, including a “relatively smooth ice for much of Mawikwe Bay (at Meyers Beach) and a fractured ice sheet along the entire length of the caves. This sheet is rough with shark fins and overturned ice.” Significant snow cover is one of the big challenges, the release said.... Full story

HURLEY — Like two heavyweight boxers slugging it out in the middle of the ring in a championship fight, Birchwood finally emerged with a 63-61 double overtime victory over Hurley in a WIAA Division 5 regional semifinal game on Friday night. MELLEN, Wis. — Mercer fought back from a 20-point deficit to take the lead, but they couldn’t finish it as Mellen won the WIAA Division 5 regional semifinal 68-60 Friday night. Mellen led 42-22, but Mercer went on a 27-6 run to take a 49-48 lead. “We made it interesting,” Mercer coach Adam Miller said. “I told the boys, if you’re going to go down, you better go down swinging.” Mellen played four corners when it took that 20-point lead. IRONWOOD — Wesley United Methodist Church kicked off the first Friday of March by offering a free community dinner. Head trustee for the church Ronald Ahonen said the church has cooked Christmas dinners for the neighborhood in the past, but has never done something like this before. He said, the mission of the church is to serve and that’s what they are trying to do. “We hope people come and enjoy the fellowship as well as the dinner,” he added.
