OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. - Commander Eric M. Jewess, U.S. Coast Guard Retired, 57, of Ocean Springs, formerly of Bessemer, Mich., passed away unexpectedly Friday, March 6, 2015, at his home in Ocean Springs. He was born Sept. 23, 1957, the son of Jack and Yoko Jewess. On Dec. 21, 1985, he was married to Monda McLaughlin, aboard ship. Eric graduated from A.D. Johnston High School, Bessemer, in 1975. IRONWOOD — A three year-contract for mowing and trimming at the Riverside Cemetery and city parks was awarded Monday by the city commission to Harma’s Lawn and Property Service, of Hurley. The commission agreed to pay Paul Harma $65,520 for the cemetery work and $14,250 for the city parks mowing. City manager Scott Erickson noted Saari Lawn Service, of Montreal, Wis., the only other bidder, was just a few hundred dollars off. RAMSAY - The Bessemer Township board met Monday to discuss support for several resolutions. The first resolution focused on poverty guidelines and exemptions on property taxes for qualifying individuals and families. "We deal with this every year," said Township Supervisor Jeff Randall. "It allows, as state law requires, those that fit the poverty guidelines can apply for exemption or a portion of exemption from their property taxes." ONTONAGON — The Ontonagon Village Council Monday heard a report from Manager Joe Erickson reviewing the operations of the Ontonagon Village Housing Commission. The housing commission governs the operation of Cane Court housing units for low income residents. Cane Court is owned by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, with by-laws set by both HUD and the commission. Congratulations to the Bantam B hockey state champion Polar Hawks. The co-op team of 12 players, ages 12 to 15, from the Ironwood Polar Bear and Iron River Ice Hawk hockey clubs went 5-0 at the state tournament in Marquette last weekend, including an 8-0 win over Jackson in the final Sunday. “It was a great showing by our local kids,” said Brian Roehm, of Ironwood, one of three coaches. WAKEFIELD - Wakefield-Marenisco came from behind to defeat Watersmeet 56-53 in a first round game of the MHSAA Class D District 127 Tournament on Monday night.
