IRONWOOD - Balmy temperatures resulted in a large crowd at Ironwood's Jack Frost Festival parade Saturday night. BESSEMER - A new K-9 deputy was sworn in last week by Gogebic County Sheriff Ross Solberg, and - doggone it - nobody could stop smiling. IRONWOOD - The Ironwood Memorial Building's auditorium acted as a competition hall for the Poetry Out Loud competition on Monday morning, with five students from area schools aiming to earn their place in the coming state competition. Event coordinator Rebecca Binkley of the Gogebic-Ontonagon Intermediate School District said the competition is a national competition where high school students select two poems from an anthology to read to judges. BRUCE CROSSING, Mich. - Eleanor Theodora Barnes (nee Paulson) of Bruce Crossing, passed away peacefully on Nov. 27, 2023, at Omega House in Houghton, with her family by her side. BESSEMER, Mich. - Mary C. Strelcheck, 88, formerly of Bessemer and a long-time resident of Gogebic Medical Care Facility in Wakefield, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, Nov. 26, 2023. WAKEFIELD, Mich. - At the midnight hour Nov. 21, 2023, Edna Loretta Hollenbeck, age 100, peacefully passed away in at Gogebic Medical Facility in Wakefield. Edna was born Oct. 27, 1923, to Fred and Eve Flemmer in Napoleon, North Dakota. She married William "Denny" Hollenbeck, a World War II Purple Heart veteran, on Nov. 27, 1948, after exchanging love letters during the war.
