    WAKEFIELD - The Wakefield Historical Society hosted its Hometown Variety Show that drew a crowd of around 100 people to the Wakefield-Marenisco High School music room-auditorium on Wednesday. Denise Haas, a member of the historical society, was master of ceremonies for the event. She also performed a solo song, as well as part of an a cappella group called the Tamster Trio.     NORMANDY, France - A 1994 graduate of A.D. Johnston High School in Bessemer had the honor of meeting President Barack Obama at the 70th anniversary of the Normandy Beach invasion on June 6. Army Sgt. First Class Peter Bracket, of Ramsay, also met numerous World War II veterans and mingled with the foreign residents who continue to appreciate the United States for its war contributions.     BESSEMER - People excited to see the 23rd Annual Domino Fall, a Bessemer Blast attraction that draws a crowd every year, approached the doors of the A.D. Johnston High School gymnasium on Wednesday only to find out that the event was cancelled because of some pesky varmints.     BESSEMER - One flag pole sits empty at the Bessemer Ethnic Commons Park after the wrong flag was raised to represent the Cornish, an ethnic group representing the country of Cornwall.     IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Edna E. Brown, 89, of Ironwood Township, passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2014. She was born May 30, 1925, in Ironwood, daughter of the late Eric and Fannie (Rajala) Haanpaa. Edna attended Roosevelt School and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1943. Following high school, she moved to Detroit and found employment as a "Rosie the Riveter." Edna married Raymond Haapala in 1947. Wilma was born Oct. 24, 1919, in Kimball, Wis., daughter of the late Leander and Maria (Paavola) Stenroos.
