  • Bessemer to host public meeting on school consolidation

    BESSEMER — Bessemer school officials will host a public informational forum on consolidation in the A.D. Johnston High School gymnasium following the school’s Board of Education meeting Monday night. The consolidation of Bessemer and nearby Wakefield-Marenisco School District has been expressed by some community members as an appropriate path to improving the area’s education.     PORCUPINE MOUNTAINS - The twangs of banjos and bass drum stomps were sent throughout the Porcupine Mountains this weekend and heard by hundreds of people who sat on blankets, in fold-up camping chairs or beneath tents, under threat of rain from the gray skies above.     BESSEMER - Marty's Goldenaires Drum and Bugle Corps held its annual fundraising picnic at Bluff Valley Park Saturday. "The corps started in 1950," said assistant musical director Dustin Pitrone, "And we've been having our picnic every year, consecutively, since 1980."   • Little Finland holds annual membership potluck Sunday

    HURLEY - Little Finland held its annual potluck Sunday afternoon. "This is our membership picnic," president Sonja Luoma said, "We've had this at least every year since 1980." Average attendance is about 40 people. "Our membership is large, about 250, but they're kind of scattered all over the place, so not everyone is able attend," Luoma said. Dishes included bratwurst, potato salad and various casseroles and salads. "It's not necessarily Finnish food," Luoma said, "It's just whatever anybody brings."     HURLEY, Wis. - Lempi E. Niemi, 96, of West Harding Road, Bessemer Township, Mich., died Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, in Hurley. Lempi was born Feb. 3, 1918, in Ironwood Township, Mich., daughter of the late Isaac and Alma (Koskela) Suliin. Lempi attended Section 12 and McKinley schools in Ironwood Township. She and her husband, Reino, owned and operated the Niemi dairy farm in Bessemer Township. Lempi was a leader of 4-H, teaching many young girls how to sew.     WAKEFIELD, Mich. - Paul Michael Harvey, 67, a longtime resident of Wakefield, passed away peacefully Friday, Aug. 22, 2014. Paul was born on April 6, 1947, in Waukegan, Ill., a son of Maitland and Ruth (Willing) Harvey. He attended Antioch (Ill.) High School and graduated in 1966. Paul enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, and proudly served his country for four years. In 1970, he was honorably discharged as a sergeant.
