IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP - Ironwood scored four unanswered goals to defeat Phelps 4-1 in Northern Lights Conference action. The Red Devils overcame a sluggish start as Phelps scored the game's first goal. But Ironwood's Isaac Aukee scored the next three, one in the first half to make it a 1-1 tie at the half, and two more in the second half for a hat trick. Labor Day weekend means the imminent arrival of another school year for Gogebic County students. The first day of school for students in the Ironwood, Bessemer, Wakefield-Marenisco and Watersmeet districts is Tuesday. For students in the Ironwood Area Schools, classes begin at 8 a.m. with dismissal times of 3:05, 3:10 and 3:15 p.m. for grades K-2, 3-6 and 7-12 respectively. BLACK RIVER HARBOR — The annual Labor Day Weekend Fishing Derby at Black River Harbor kicks off today with Powderpuff (women’s) competition. The Black River Harbor Boating Club contest runs through noon on Labor Day and visitors to the harbor can stop and view the fish and awards ceremony on Monday afternoon. Prizes are awarded in the lake trout, salmon and rainbow-brown trout divisions. Powderpuff fish are not eligible to enter the main derby from Saturday through Monday.
