LITTLE GIRL'S POINT - Lake Road near Upper Powers Road is closed to traffic as the Maki Creek culvert replacement project has begun. It is the last of 10 culvert replacement projects throughout the county and by far the most extensive, and expensive. Smith Construction, of Marquette, the general contractor for the project, was expected to begin laying the culverts on Monday, according to an Xcel Energy worker who was at the scene on Friday. BESSEMER - On a cold, mid-October morning, biology students in Bessemer conducted their annual forestry day and watershed assessment at Powdermill Creek in Bessemer. This year brought high water and cool temperatures, according to biology teacher Dave Rowe. "The high water made it more difficult to shock and net the trout than usual, but we still caught 15 that morning," he said. HURLEY - Students at the Hurley K-12 School got into the Halloween spirit Friday. Halloween capped off "Red Ribbon Week" at the school, highlighting anti-drinking, anti-bullying and anti-drugs. Students dressed up throughout the week in different themes to show their support of being drug- and alcohol-free and to stop bullying.
