    HURLEY — Tuesday’s game played out a whole lot like 2011 and that was a good thing for Hurley. The No. 2 seed Midgettes held on to beat No. 3 Ladysmith 3-1 in Tuesday’s WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal. Hurley travels to top-seed Chequamegon Thursday for the regional final at 5 p.m. The Screaming Eagles defeated No. 5 Cameron 7-0 in Tuesday’s other semifinal.   • Lake Road collapses; couple escapes injury

    LITTLE GIRL’S POINT — An elderly couple luckily escaped injury when a sinkhole broke open on County 505 (Lake Road) under their vehicle around noon Tuesday. The collapse of the county road was the result of more than 5 inches of rain in less than three days. Gogebic County Road Commission Engineer Darren Pionk said there had been quite a bit of damage from flooding throughout the county and he had been in contact with Federal Emergency Management Agency officials about getting funding... Full story

  • Board discusses separation of coaching, non-instructional pay from benefits

    ONTONAGON — The Ontonagon Area Board of Education Monday agreed to ask for bids on all non-instructional Ontonagon Teacher Education Association schedule B positions. Superintendent Gray Webber said the board has been trying to reach an agreement with the education association to separate coaching and non-instructional pay from fringe and retirement benefits for the past three years. “We could not reach that agreement and will institute it ourselves,” he said, adding many other school dist... Full story

Robert Jauch, D–Poplar, congratulating the Dalai Lama for showing people that compassion is not a weakness. How nice of Big Bob to send in the photo to get his name and face in the paper and to show us all how hard he’s working in Madison, Wis.     IRONWOOD, Mich. — Hugo Verner Saarnio, born June 5, 1919, passed away on May 13, 2013, with his family at his side. He was the son of Willamina and John Saarnio of Viipuri, Finland. Hugo was the brother to Antti, Annikki, Lyyli, Kalle, Eva and Martin, all of whom preceded him in death. Hugo was a veteran of the Finnish Army. After the war in 1946, Hugo and his wife Aino, along with their daughter, Christine, and son, Andrew, left their beloved but war-torn homeland for a new life in America.... Full story

    HURLEY, Wis. — John E. Dietel, 82, of Hurley, died unexpectedly Sunday, May 19, 2013, in his home. He was born Dec. 28, 1930, in Prentice, son of the late Arthur and Alice (Jeske) Dietel, attended school in Oma, and logged for his stepfather at a young age. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea as a combat infantryman, receiving the Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany)... Full story

    FRIDLEY, Minn. — Jay Walfred Perttula, 54, of Fridley, formerly of Trout Creek, Mich., passed away quietly on May 10, 2013, after an 8-month battle with cancer. Jay was born on Nov. 9, 1958, to the late Walfred and Ellen (Hattula) Perttula. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Walfred Jr. and David.   • 'Walk a Mile in My Shoes' rally set for May 29

    WAKEFIELD — Gogebic County Community Mental Health is planning a “Walk a Mile in My Shoes” rally on Wednesday, May 29, with registration at 10:30 a.m. and the rally beginning at 11 a.m. at the new pavilion at Sunday Lake in Wakefield.
