  • Wakefield council approves sewer rate increase

    WAKEFIELD - The Wakefield City Council raised sewer rates at its Monday evening meeting. The council agreed to increase the sewer rate from $2 to $3.50 per 1,000 gallons and also to decrease the administration cost for the sewer fund by $3,000. This will generate an additional $48,600 in revenue for the council, assuming each resident uses 3,000 gallons of water per month, said city manager John Siira in a memo to the council.     IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP - The Christmas tree at the Steve and Rose Bratu home in Ironwood Township is special this year. It's as wide as it is tall. Steve and his son, Marcus, were hunting in Montana when they found the juniper that was suitable for the family tree. After cutting it down, getting the tree home was no easy task, as it weighs around 300 pounds, according to Rose, who said junipers are not found in the Upper Peninsula.     WOODRUFF, Wis. — Frederick D. “Fritz” Layman, 83, of Mercer, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, at Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff. He was born April 12, 1930, in Mercer, son of the late Charles and Susan (Pemble) Layman, and graduated from Mercer High School in 1948. He was married to the former Sylvia Warzynski on July 29, 1950, at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church in Mercer.     CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. — Elaine K. (Hellen) Mandelin, 64, of Chippewa Falls, formerly of Hurley, passed away suddenly on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, at her home. Elaine was the daughter of Ina and Sulo Hellen. She is survived by her two sisters, Jean (Jim) Lombardo, of Wausau, and Marlene Betlach, of Libertyville, Ill.
