  • Midgets survive L'Anse upset bid, qualify for playoffs

    Jason Juno|Sep 24, 2016

L'ANSE - Hurley defensive tackle Mitchell Hissa felt a lot better in the second half when he switched from drinking water that didn't agree with him to Gatorade. Everybody on the Hurley sideline felt better in the second half as the Midgets averted L'Anse's upset attempt by keeping the Hornets off the board after the break. The Midgets defeated the Purple Hornets 40-20 and qualified for the WIAA playoffs for the 19th consecutive year. Hurley trailed much of the first half and entered halftime...

  • Midgets drop OT thriller to Calumet

    Jason Juno|Sep 10, 2016

HURLEY - Why'd they wait so long? In the Midgets' first year in the West-PAC, they went toe-to-toe with defending champion and perennial power Calumet, dropping an absolute thriller 26-20 in overtime Friday night. Neither team was perfect, as they combined for 10 turnovers. But both teams fought through that, rode the roller coaster of four lead changes and made fans wish the Midgets had been in the West-PAC for years. It was a heartbreaking way to lose for the Midgets, who nonetheless have ente...

  • Midgets upend Wykons

    Jason Juno|Sep 3, 2016

HURLEY — Hurley not only excelled in its first major West-PAC test, it kept conference power West Iron County out of the end zone. Hurley upended the Wykons with an exciting 22-3 victory Friday night. Penalties cost the Wykons, who reached the red zone on both first-half possessions but only managed a field goal. Hurley took all the momentum, scoring a touchdown with 14 seconds left in the first half and another just 3:10 into the second half for a 14-3 lead. "To not let this team in the end z...

    Tom Stankard|Aug 8, 2016

HURLEY - To hone in their skills, the Hurley Midgets cheerleaders participated in a Universal Cheerleaders Association camp Friday and Saturday at the Hurley K-12 School. Watching the team practice, coach Melissa DeCarlo said the team has had "facelift" over the past couple years and decided to call on the UAC to help them cheer and perform at a higher level, one that she knows they're capable of. She said the team consists of 17 girls. Over the course of the weekend, the team learned stunts,...

  • Hurley routs Drummond to win Regional title

    Jason Juno|Jun 3, 2016

HURLEY — Hurley waited six years to win another regional title. The Midgets only needed 4.5 innings — in the entire tournament — to break that drought and return to sectionals for the first time since 2010. The Midgets beat Drummond 11-0 in Thursday's WIAA Division 4 regional final. The top-seeded Midgets got a first-round bye and then advanced through the semifinal when No. 5 Washburn forfeited due to a class trip. Hurley then beat No. 2 Drummond, last year's D-4 regional champion, for the third time this season. Drummond had to use its ace p...

    Jason Juno|May 24, 2016

TONY, Wis. - No one came close to the Hurley boys, who won their first WIAA Division 3 regional track-and-field meet since 2005 Monday. The Indianhead Conference dominated the day with Hurley first with 155 points, South Shore/Washburn second with 118 and Drummond third at 102. Phillips was the first team from another conference (fourth place, 100 points). The top four finishers in each event qualified for Thursday's sectional at Colfax where the top four advance to the state meet. Storms that f...

  • Midgets docked by Ashland

    Jason Juno|Feb 20, 2016

HURLEY - Ashland's 3-17 record doesn't do that team any justice. Friday night's final score didn't showcase Hurley's strong effort either. The Oredockers defeated the Midgets 68-57 Friday night in front of a tournament-like crowd to watch the two rivals on Parents Night and homecoming. Hurley came back from a 34-23 halftime deficit, coming as close as one point in the second half. But Ashland leading scorer Brendan Carter, 26 points, struck for three and-1 plays down the stretch when the...

  • Midgets hold off Tigers

    Jason Juno|Feb 13, 2016

HURLEY - On the second Friday in a row, Hurley buried a rival early in the game. After coming out strong in a win at Ironwood last week, the Midgets did the same against their Iron County rivals, Mercer, this week, winning 64-53. The Midgets led 15-3 and 30-9 in the first half. Mercer reduced the deficit to single digits in the second half, but the Tigers didn't have an answer for the bigger Midgets, James Sukanen (6-6), who had 27 points and 16 rebounds, or guard Isaac DeCarlo, who scored 16...

  • Midgets tower over cold Red Devils

    Jason Juno|Feb 6, 2016

IRONWOOD - Hurley utilized its size advantage and held Ironwood's shooters in check to beat its rival 56-34 Friday night. One of the biggest crowds of the season was on hand for the contest, but the Midgets took them out of it early on, building leads of 7-0, 14-3 and then 29-11 at halftime. The Red Devils didn't have an answer for Hurley's bigs, especially James Sukanen, who scored 22 points. Ironwood had hoped to shoot well to help combat that deficiency, but they shot just 27 percent from... Full story

HURLEY - Hurley picked up its fifth straight win and fourth consecutive in shootout fashion 48-34 over North Dickinson Friday night. Both teams tallied more than 400 yards of offense and scored 20 points apiece in a fourth quarter that was a one-possession game until the Midgets iced it with a touchdown with 1:16 to go. • Midgets hand Broncos first loss

    Jason Juno|Oct 3, 2015

HARRIS – A three-hour bus ride nor the No. 3-ranked Division 8 team in the Upper Peninsula could stop the Hurley Midgets Friday night. Nothing really is stopping Hurley these days. The Midgets racked up 500 rushing yards on 54 carries and handed host Bark River-Harris its first loss of the season 52-34 Friday night. Hurley won its fourth straight game in the midst of a tough schedule, improved to 6-1 and secured an 18th straight trip to the WIAA postseason. "I thought offensively our kids w... Full story

  • Midgets turn shootout with Miners into blowout

    Jason Juno|Sep 26, 2015

HURLEY - Once defense arrived at Friday's game, it stole the show. The Hurley Midgets, buoyed by two third-quarter takeaways, shut out the Gogebic Miners in the second half for a 54-28 Great Western Conference victory. Gogebic recovered quickly from last week's humbling trip to Lake Linden and led the Midgets 28-27 at the half in a fast-paced shootout. But things quickly went Hurley's way after halftime. "We scuffled a bit in the first half. They were coming really quick downhill, in between... Full story

  • Midgets sink in Lake Linden 35-6

    Jason Juno|Sep 8, 2015

LAKE LINDEN - The second quarter couldn't have gone much worse. But really, the whole day was one to forget for Hurley. Lake Linden-Hubbell dominated Hurley for a 35-6 Great Western Conference victory on a steamy Saturday afternoon. "Bottom line is they outplayed us today, big time," Hurley coach Scott Erickson said. The Lakes took control early, scoring 11 first-quarter points off two long and impressive scoring drives where their offensive line took control. But that deficit appeared... Full story

  • Dominating decade: Midgets win 10th straight over Devils

    Jason Juno|Aug 29, 2015

HURLEY - Hurley's 10th straight victory over Ironwood Friday night was its biggest in the impressive run. The Midgets defeated Ironwood 55-6, the 49-point margin of victory eclipsing the 42-point defeats last year and in 2012. Hurley only needed six first downs thanks to short fields from 134 yards on five punt returns and a turnover. The Midgets scored on the first play of the drive twice and had three four-play drives. Every Midget drive started in Ironwood territory in the first half.... Full story

    Jason Juno|Aug 28, 2015

ASHLAND, Wis. - The Gogebic Miners cross country program debuted with a fifth-place finish out of 12 teams in the boys race at the Ashland Invitational Thursday. • Midgets start football practice with high hopes for season

    Jason Juno|Aug 5, 2015

HURLEY - It felt like fall Tuesday morning. The air was cooler. And there was football. Thirty-eight Hurley Midgets took part in the first day of practice at the Hurley K-12 School. A couple of players weren't there Tuesday and the number of players is expected to hit approximately 40. "We wish we had a couple more freshmen and sophomores, but we have plenty of upperclassmen (about 26)," Hurley coach Scott Erickson said. It was a typical first day, he said. Some players were rusty. Coaches... Full story

  • Midgets perfect wing T offense with state championship coach

    Jason Juno|Jun 16, 2015

HURLEY - People who run the wing T offense stick together. Zeeland West coach John Shillito, who has won three Michigan High School Athletic Association state championships, came 9.5 hours to help Hurley fine tune its wing T offense. Hurley's version of the deceptive power offense has been doing pretty well on its own in recent years, but the Midgets' coaching staff saw an opportunity to get even better. "We asked him up here to let us have a chance to fine tune some things," Hurley coach Scott... Full story

  • Midgets' season washes away in semifinal

    Jason Juno|Jun 4, 2015

HURLEY - A seventh-inning comeback was a long shot for Hurley, which trailed 7-3, even with the heart of the order coming up. The weather made sure it wouldn't happen. The No. 2 seed Midgets lost a WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal 7-3 to No. 3 Phillips in six innings Wednesday. Umpires first delayed the game at 6:30 p.m. due to thunder and lightning in the area right after the top of the seventh inning began. The weather continued to get worse with moderate rain moving in. It was called at 7:3... Full story

  • Tenlen, Midgets win at foggy, wet, cold Hurley Invitational

    Jason Juno|May 12, 2015

HURLEY — Golfers couldn't see the greens and most of them couldn't feel their hands. Hurley's Jake Tenlen still managed to shoot a 40 on the front nine at Eagle Bluff and be medalist by eight strokes at Monday's Hurley Invitational. "Home-course advantage, I guess," Hurley coach Jeff Tenlen said. The Midgets won the event with a score of 192. Chequamegon finished at 201 and Prentice had 220. It was relatively warm until it started to rain heavily not long after the invite started. The fog rolled in right away and it was miserable. "You know t... Full story

"It was a nice win, that's for sure," Hurley coach Aaron Bender said. "I like to see our team not giving up so many unearned runs, so we put together a nice ballgame today. • 6-run innings carry Midgets past Diggers

    Pat Krause|Apr 28, 2015

HURLEY — Hurley scored six times in the sixth inning to put the 10-run mercy rule into effect and downed Mellen 19-9 on Monday night. “We haven’t been getting much production from the bottom part of the line-up, but we hit tonight for the first time,” Midget coach Aaron Bender said. “I shuffled the line-up and it seemed to work. I put Kohl Manzanares further down in the line-up. Once again, we got a good pitching performance with some walks, but ultimately, errors hurt the most. We must have the lowest ERA in the country but have given up the m... Full story

    Jason Juno|Mar 9, 2015

PHILLIPS, Wis. - Coach Mike Swartz never stopped believing his Hurley Midgets would be playing in Saturday's WIAA Division 4 regional final. Even after the team's 0-5 start. Hurley's 10-game winning streak came to an end as No. 1 Phillips eliminated the No. 3 Midgets 70-46 in Saturday's regional final. They overcame early injuries to Mitchell Maki and Jake Tenlen and went from that 0-5 start to a second-place finish in the Indianhead Conference's East Division and then to Saturday's trophy game.
