Letter 'unbecoming' for writer

To the Editor:

Former Daily Globe publisher Joe Karius submitted what can only be described as a petty letter to the editor, criticizing state Sen. Robert Jauch, D-Poplar, for submitting a photo of himself with the Dalai Lama in Madison, Wis. The thrust of Karius’ letter is that Jauch is not a hard worker if he can find time in his day for a photo opportunity with the Dalai Lama.

Jauch briefly greeted the Dalai Lama while he was at the capitol to address a joint gathering of the Wisconsin Legislature — which is controlled by the Republicans. The Republican leadership felt the Dalai Lama’s presence was significant enough to warrant a gathering of the entire state Senate and Assembly. Gov. Scott Walker also met privately with the Dalai Lama earlier the same day.

Karius’ statements and thinly-veiled insults are unbecoming of a former newspaper editor and publisher. The photo portrayed a human interest story — it was not an effort to show your senator hard at work. How could a picture of a local official greeting a world-recognized spiritual leader evoke such mean-spirited comments?

It is disappointing to see the former publisher of our local paper engaged in such shallow, partisan nonsense. One has to wonder, in retrospect, how such thinking influenced the day-to-day reporting in the newspaper. By the way, Jauch is in the Senate, not the Assembly.
