IPSD teaches fire safety

IRONWOOD - Students at All Saints Catholic Academy in Ironwood held a Fire Safety Day Friday afternoon at the school.

Students were visited by members of the Ironwood Public Safety Department and got to check out the department's fire trucks and some of the equipment.

All Saints' new principal, Timothy Barry, said the school has held similar events in the past.

"It's fire safety month and we're having a fire safety day," he said. "They're here showing the kids how all the equipment works, and talking about fire safety in their homes."

IPSD fire officer Brandon Snyder and Matt Sterbenz, public safety officer, showed the students some of the common firefighting equipment on the trucks, such as the hose, ax and siren.

Sterbenz also donned the firefighters uniform and posed for photos with the kids.

All Saints provides schooling for 4-year-olds up through eighth grade. Students can also take high school classes virtually through an online classroom.

Barry said the academy sought classes for 3-year-olds, but didn't have enough students. It plans to host 3-year-olds next year if enough participate.
