Area cross country trails remain busy

IRONWOOD - Visitors at ABR Trails and Wolverine Ski Trails skied and snowshoed into the new year with sunshine and milder temperatures on Thursday.

ABR owner Eric Anderson said that the visitors were "really happy with conditions."

Local skier, Sandy Pera, of Wakefield agreed.

"I come here often," said Pera, who holds a season pass. "There is great snow for this time of year."

Though the first day of the new year was busier than normal, according to Anderson. Pera said you do not see many others while skiing.

"You don't notice many people," she said after being out on the trails for two hours. "There's just so many trails."

Anderson said people come from all over to use the trails. "We just rented to a family of 12 Russians," he said.

Anderson also said that many come from closer states, including Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota and Iowa.

Out at Wolverine Nordic Ski Trails, several skiers were resting in the warming shelter, but not for too long as they wanted to get at least one more late afternoon run in on Thursday.

Next weekend, on Jan. 10, the sixth Sisu Ski Fest will take place, which will start at ABR trails and finish on Aurora Street in downtown Ironwood.

The 42-kilometer Sisu full marathon is the signature race of the event, but there is also a 21K Heikki Lunta half-marathon.

For the younger ones, there will also be the Junior Sisu 3K and 5K.
