Wolverine Trails expands snowshoe system

IRONWOOD - Wolverine Nordic Trail system recently added three new snowshoe trails to the already existing Hospital Loop.

"Many don't know about the new snowshoe options that are available," said Wolverine board member Dennis Spaete.

The Snowflake trail is an easy 2.1-kilometer route, leaving from the warming chalet on Sunset Road in Ironwood Township.

Snow Snake Loop is an intermediate trail, leaving from the chalet and follows parts of the mountain bike trails.

Snow Summit makes a loop which begins at the Snow Summit Road parking near Powderhorn Mountain and can be taken to the Wolverine chalet.

Though the trails have not been added to the maps, there are about 12 kilometers of snowshoe trails available.

Trail donations are appreciated for each visit to the trail system, which is also open for skiing in the winter, and biking and hiking in the summer. The skiing trails are groomed on a regular basis as well, Spaete said.

Wolverine is also preparing for the YooperBeiner Snowshoe race to be held on Saturday, Feb. 21.

Volunteers are needed for the event and there is a quarterly board meeting planned at 6 p.m. on Jan. 12 at the Wolverine Chalet which will include discussion of the event.

Timers, trail spotters, food preparation, course preparation and other workers are needed, Spaete said.
