Wakefield Mayor Pro Tem Bolen leads officials in Lansing and D.C.

LANSING - Wakefield Mayor Pro Tem Dick Bolen has been playing a leading role in more than just the city of Wakefield recently, as part of his role as the president of the Michigan Municipal League, according to a league press release.

In early March, he traveled to Washington D.C. as part of Michigan's delegation to the 50th Annual National League of Cities Congressional City Conference. Among the speakers at the event was President Barack Obama, who discussed a new initiative to stimulate technology job growth throughout the country.

Bolen also attended meetings with various officials from both other states and the national level, including Michigan U.S. Senator Gary Peters and a session on small-town funding and transportation issues hosted by the White House.

Today and Wednesday, Bolen will also be leading the League's 2015 Capital Conference in Lansing.

"League President Bolen has had a busy month, that's for sure," said Dan Gilmartin, executive director and CEO of the League, in the release.

This annual event focuses on a variety of legislative issues facing Michigan communities, according to the release, including the importance of Proposal 1. The proposal, which is designed to provide funding to repair the state's roads as well as the state's municipalities and schools, will be decided by voters during the May 5 election.

"President Bolen is not even half way into his one-year term as board president but he has already made his mark as a leader for Michigan's communities," Gilmartin said in the release. "He's doing an outstanding job representing our state in Washington and in Lansing, but he's also leading by example. In January, the League board decided to endorse Proposal 1 and Bolen and the Wakefield city council became the first city in Michigan to pass a resolution in support of Proposal 1. That's true leadership."

Among the speakers joining Bolen at the conference in Lansing will be Lt. Governor Brian Calley, according to the press release.
