MDOT highway projects in U.P. getting under way

Highway projects are gearing up in the Upper Peninsula with the warmer weather.

The Michigan Department of Transportation said a mammoth three-part M-28 resurfacing project, including from near Wakefield to Bergland, will begin on Monday and run through July 31.

The 23.8 miles of work will be on M-28 from Tula to Bergland, from Ewen to Bruce Crossing, and from Sidnaw to the Houghton County line.

The work will also include gravel shoulders, concrete curb, gutter, sidewalk and ramps, and pavement marking.

The project will begin with concrete work and continue with the chip sealing.

It will require single-lane closures with flag control and a traffic shift.

An M-26 resurfacing project is in Ontonagon and Houghton counties.

It began Thursday and runs through July 31.

MDOT will resurface 20.8 miles of M-26, from U.S. 45 north to Twin Lakes Road in Ontonagon and Houghton counties, using a chip seal. The work also includes gravel shoulders, concrete curb, gutter, sidewalk and ramps and pavement marking.

Single-lane closures will be required.

A U.S. 2 reconstruction project near Crystal Falls begins on Monday. It is scheduled to run through Oct. 2.

MDOT will resurface one mile and reconstruct 2.3 miles of U.S. 2 from Park Street to County Road 424, south of Crystal Falls. The project will include concrete pavement repairs and upgrading sidewalk ramps to Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

Single-lane closures with flag control and a temporary traffic signal will be necessary.
