Ironwood's annual spring clean up draws crowd on Saturday

IRONWOOD - The city of Ironwood's spring garbage drop off was held Saturday in a vacant lot on East Ayer Street.

According to City Manager Scott Erickson, the most popular items to be thrown away were mattresses.

Residents had a bit of a wait to unload their vehicles, with the line - which began forming long before the official 8 a.m. start - stretching a few blocks from the vacant lot back to the old Josephson Nursing Home.

Officials kept an eye out to make sure that there were no batteries or tires included in the items dropped off. These items need to be brought to the transfer station for disposal, said a spokesman.

About 25 members of the Ironwood JROTC program, led by Bill Murphy, were there as volunteers, helping unload vehicles and move the items to large dumpsters. Ironwood Mayor Kim Corcoran was also there volunteering.
