18th annual John Jarvi run to be held Saturday

IRONWOOD — For the 18th time, area runners will run in the memory of John Jarvi Jr. as the Ironwood cross country team hosts its annual fundraiser in downtown Ironwood on Saturday.

Jarvi, who was an avid runner and supporter of the community, passed away in 1996 after battling brain cancer, explained cross country coach Benjamin Schmandt.

“(Jarvi) was very dedicated to the community,” Schmandt said, “He was an avid (supporter) of the sport of running ... very inspirational member of the community.”

The event will feature a 10K and a 5K walk/run with both races beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the corner of Lowell and Aurora streets by Main Street Fitness.

Participants can register for either race up until the start of the race, Schmandt said.

The 5K route will begin on Lowell Street and take runners to Norrie Park before returning to the starting line. The 10K route will continue past Norrie Park and continuing in the direction of the ABR ski trails before looping around and heading back downtown, Schmandt said.

The races will be followed by a “tot run” that should only go a block or two.

The event is a major fundraiser for the cross country program, Schmandt said.

“It’s been huge for us, as far as funding for expenses such as entry fees, transportation and other kinds of expenses that come along the way.”

Schmandt expects the weather to be great, with the day predicted to be clear and not too windy.

Although the run is being held on Memorial Day weekend, Schmandt hopes to top last year’s total of 140 entries. But above all, he hopes participants enjoy the day.

“Those who come out to run, run. Those who come out to watch, watch. Those who can come help, help. We’re always glad to have people come out and participate in whatever ways that they can,” Schmandt said.
