Fourth grade students can cut free Ottawa trees

IRONWOOD — Area residents may obtain Christmas tree permits for $5 for the Ottawa National Forest at the Ironwood office or visitor centers before heading out.

As part of the “Every Kid in a Park” initiative, the U.S. Forest Service is offering one free holiday tree-cutting permit to any fourth grader who presents a valid free tree pass at participating Forest Service units.

The Forest Service is among a number of federal agencies supporting the administration’s initiative. More information can be found at everykidinapark.gov.

“The Ottawa National Forest encourages all fourth grade students to take advantage of this program and obtain their free holiday tree permits.  This is a great opportunity for students to spend the day with their family looking for their holiday tree,” said Ottawa Supervisor Linda Jackson.  “Visit your local Forest Service office or the Ottawa Visitor Center to obtain your permit.”

Foresters offer some reminders and tips for cutting trees:

—Travel with a companion and always tell someone where you are going and when to expect you back.

—Remember to take the tree-cutting permit and a map of the location.

—Follow holiday tree permit conditions.

—Make sure the chosen tree is on national forest land and respect private property owners by not trespassing.

Fuelwood, bough and Christmas tree permits are also available at Ottawa National Forest offices and visitor centers.
