Cold snap to last until Thursday

IRONWOOD — The cold snap that arrived in Ironwood on Saturday night is expected to last through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

High temperatures in the single digits, ranging to 7-below on Tuesday, are forecast for the next three days, not unusual for January in Ironwood.

The low reading for the 24-hour period to 7 a.m. Sunday was minus 6. A total of 2 inches of snow fell at the Gogebic-Iron Wastewater Treatment Plant on U.S. 2, while other areas of the Gogebic Range received more.

Sunday’s low marked the first sub-zero weather of what has been an unusally mild winter in Ironwood, with daily temperatures from 10 to 15 degrees above normal.

The low reading for today was minus-35 in 1977, according to the NWS office in Marquette.

The average temperature for Jan. 11 in Ironwood over the past 114 years is 11.6 degrees.

Thursday’s high is predicted at 14, with a low of 6.

Saturday may produce a return of temperatures into the 20s, according to the NWS forecast.
