Doris J. Soine

KIMBALL, Wis. - Doris J. Soine, 84, of Kimball, died peacefully Friday, Jan. 15, 2016, in her home, surrounded by her loving family, following a brief battle with cancer.

The former Doris J. Valle was born Sept. 17, 1931, in Gile, daughter of the late Frank and Johanna (DaRonco) Valle, and graduated from J.E. Murphy High School in Hurley with the Class of 1949.

She then attended St. Scholastica School of Nursing in Duluth, Minn., receiving a degree as a registered nurse, and worked at the Newport Hospital in Ironwood, Mich., for a short time. Doris then traveled with her husband while he served in the military, residing in Arizona, New Jersey and Washington. She also resided in Babbitt, Minn., from 1962 to 1964 while her husband was employed in Iron Range mines.

The family returned to Kimball in 1964, where Doris owned and operated the Maple Leaf Motel with her husband until 1977. She then was employed as a sales clerk at the Corkscrew Liquor Store in Kimball for 10 years and served as a volunteer at the Iron County Historical Museum in Hurley for many years.

Doris was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, was a prolific letter writer, and enjoyed reading and walking.

On Nov. 27, 1954, she was united in marriage to Gordon S. Soine at St. Mary's Church by the late Monsignor Michael Prock. Gordon preceded her in death on Dec. 29, 2009.

Surviving are two sons, Mark (Terry), Sturtevant, and Dan (Karen), Iron Belt; two daughters, Julie (Dan) Siirila, Ironwood, and Mary Jo Rodriguez, Santa Fe, N.M .; son-in-law, Randy Nelson, Ankeny, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, Seth (Penelope) Soine, Boiling Springs, S.C., Tara Soine, Charleston, S.C., Chase (Lindsay) Soine, Racine, Shawna Soine, Sturtevant, Joshua Soine, LaCrosse, Jessica (Brad) Strand, Pence, Dayle (David) Bugalski, Oak Creek, Miquel (Barry) Lewis, Ironwood, Callie Siirila, Avon, Colo., Adam Snarski, Ankeny, Tyler Nelson, Ankeny, Tiffany Nelson, Ames, Iowa, and Neko Nelson, Ankeny; five great-grandchildren, Adeline and Evan Soine, Sawyer Strand, and Gavin and Owen Bugalski; a sister, Elsie (Carl) Kaffine, Eveleth, Minn .; numerous nieces and nephews, and special friend, Ginny Wick, of Kimball.

Besides her parents and husband, Doris was predeceased by a daughter, Pat Nelson, on Dec. 23, 2013; grandson, Christopher; brother, George Valle; sister, Irene Thomas; sister-in-law, Ann Valle, and brother-in-law, Ted Thomas.

Out of respect for her wishes, cremation has taken place.

Visitation will be Friday, Jan. 22, from 10 to 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Church in Hurley. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Frank Kordek OFM, celebrant.

Luncheon will follow in the parish hall.

Rite of Committal and interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hurley, in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Iron County Historical Museum, 303 Iron St., Hurley, WI 54534.
