Bessemer students to participate in Career Day

BESSEMER — Bessemer students are scheduled to participate in a career exploration day at A.D. Johnston High School on Thursday, March 3, inside the gymnasium.

As of Friday, high school principal Dan VanderVelden said 11 area businesses had signed up.

Students will have an opportunity to find out more about careers in health care, cosmetology, machinery, forestry, communications, hospitality, restaurant management, counseling, construction and heavy equipment operation, electronics, law enforcement and the arts.

VanderVelden said students will visit with business representatives and find out what it takes to be involved in a certain career and opportunities in the area.

“There’s a lot of opportunity here. We want students to know that they can go to a four-year college, come back and get a good job here,” he said. “Or they can go to a community college and get a good job.”

VanderVelden said career exploration day lets students start “planning their education” in accordance to a career of their choosing.

“Students can look at academic opportunities that can get them on track to a career they may want,” he said. “Hopefully, it gets them prepared and in the right direction.”

Middle school students and freshmen will have opportunities to explore their careers from 8:30 through 10:30 a.m.

Then sophomores, juniors and seniors will get their turns from 1 until 3 p.m.
