Chicks put on spring show in classroom

IRONWOOD - Spring is a season of birth and the baby chick count in Doug Foley's fifth grade class at the Luther L. Wright School around noon Wednesday was up to six.

Foley was teaching his fifth graders through the distractions of visitors as the chicks were popping out of eggs in an incubator near the entrance to the second-floor classroom.

Word quickly spread throughout the school that the awaited hatch was under way.

Through a drop.cam set-up, students in other classrooms and anyone with a capable computer could watch the chicks hatch via the Internet.

Students from some other classrooms were getting up close and personal with the chicks as they lined up to watch the stumbling baby birds take their first steps in the cardboard box. There were still several eggs that hadn't hatched in the incubator around noon.

"The whole school has been watching," Foley said.

Area residents can also get in on the live-streaming action at videonest.com/live/LLW, provided there are still eggs left to hatch.
