Joyce V. Lake

ISHPEMING, Mich. - Joyce V. Lake, 86, of 3039 County Road 496, Ely Township (Greenwood Location) passed away at her home on Friday, April 29, 2016, while in the loving care of her family and the Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice.

Joyce was born Sept. 28, 1929, in Ironwood, the daughter of the late Frank H. and Ida M. (Pohjola) Turovaara. She grew up in Ironwood and was a graduate of the Luther L. Wright High School and Goegebic Community College, with a degree in business.

Joyce married the late John Lake on Sept. 4, 1948, in Ironwood and the couple soon moved to Menomonie, Wis., where John finished his schooling and Joyce worked as a sales clerk at a local jewelry store. They returned to Ironwood and moved to the Ishpeming area in 1951 and Joyce had resided here since. Joyce loved knitting, which led her to owning and operating the Greenwood Yarn and Craft Shop from 1969 until 1997.

Joyce was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church. She had served the church as a Sunday School teacher and more recently with the WELCA, serving in the kitchen at many funeral luncheons. Joyce had also served as Den Mother for the local Cub Scout Troop 300, and volunteered with 4-H at the Ely Township School in her younger years. Joyce will also be remembered for her great baking and cooking.

Survivors include three children, Connie Dorow, of Hillsboro, Wis., Robert (Willow) Lake, of Ishpeming, and Randolph Lake, of Ishpeming; four grandchildren, Carol (Jason) Lundy, Robert (Stephanie) Lake, William (Chris Kulju) Lake and Scott Lake; four great-grandchildren, Carmen, Cloe and Miles Lundy, and Abagail Lake; sister-in-law, Carol Turovaara, of Negaunee; along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and her furry friend, Zak.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, John Lake, on Sept. 29, 2010; her parents; son-in-law, Dr. Steven Dorow; brother, Frank Turovaara; sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Robert Larson; and nephew, Frank John Larson.

The Lake family will greet relatives and friends from 10 a.m. until noon EDT on Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at the Bethel Lutheran Church. Funeral services will follow at noon on Wednesday at the Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Interment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens. A luncheon will follow the services in the church hall. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Carol, Robert, William and Scott, along with Jason Lundy and Chris Kulju.

Memorials may be directed to the Bethel Lutheran Church - Social Ministries, UPAWS or the Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice in Joyce's memory.
