Ontonagon's Paige Blake wins the long jump with this jump of 15 feet, 1/2 inch at Friday's Ontonagon Invitational at Robert Carlson Memorial Field.

ONTONAGON - Two local school records fell Friday at the Ontonagon Invitational.

A meet record may have fallen if anybody kept weather records over the years.

Bessemer's Lily Wieringa broke the school record in the 3,200-meter run and Ontonagon's Lori Wardynski became her school's all-time best in the 300 hurdles.

The heat was intense for the first half of the meet when temperatures soared into the upper 80s before clouds and eventually rain came through.

Houghton easily won both the boys and girls events. The Ontonagon girls came in third behind West-PAC schools Houghton and Calumet. The Watersmeet girls were fourth with Wakefield-Marenisco fifth, Ironwood sixth and Bessemer seventh.

The Bessemer boys took third with W-M fourth, Ontonagon fifth, Ironwood sixth and Watersmeet eighth.

Wieringa's time of 12:53.11 beat the previous Besseemer school best, set by Melissa Jackson (13:01). Wieringa set the 1,600 record last month at Northland Pines; that was also previously held by Jackson.

"That was awesome," Bessemer coach Mark Mazzon said. "The weather cooperated. It cooled down for her. Allowing her to run with the boys probably helped. She's very excited."

The 3,200 boys and girls ran together to move the meet along with bad weather appearing to be on the way.

At her home meet, Wardynski broke the 300 hurdle time of 48.64 seconds set by Mary Hoefferle in 1991 with a 47.72-second performance. She won the race by over six seconds Friday.

Wardynski has run the 300s in under 50 seconds three times on asphalt with two of them coming this week, Monday at Ironwood and Friday. That told Wardynski she was already stronger and faster than last year.

"It's been a record I've been chasing forever, it feels like, since freshman year," Wardynski said. "Today, I felt, I'm at home and the weather was good and I felt good about what was going on. The last final stretch, I felt even better than I did on Monday. I was really relieved and happy that I broke it and the monkey's off my back."

Wardynski is consistently asked around town if she will break any school records.

"I tell them I'm going to, so I really had to do it," she said. "I never would have thought in a million years I'd get the records on asphalt. That makes it even better. Then we run on rubber at U.P.'s, the Division 3 record for the 300-meter hurdles is like 48.7, so I beat that on asphalt today.

"It's kind of weird my name's going to be on the record board now. I'm so excited and I'm so excited I was able to do it at home."

Ontonagon coach Brian Amos was also impressed his niece was able to beat the record without the benefit of a rubberized track, which is considered faster. The previous record holder was in school at the same time he was.

Wardynski hopes to break the 100 hurdles record also, she was .14 second off of it Friday.

Ontonagon's Paige Blake, who teammates call cold-blooded because she enjoys running in the cold, won the long jump by a half inch over Calumet's Lea Bjorn. Blake edged Carly Ronis by .33 second in the 200 dash.

Ontonagon's Holly Wardynski had one of five individual wins for the Gladiators, in the discus.

Watersmeet's Bethany Baldwin won the shot put.

On the boys side, the W-M 400 and 800 relay teams both won and Bessemer's 1,600 relay team also took first. Ontonagon's Jaden Weisinger won the long jump.

There were a lot of good performances and even personal bests in spite of the heat.

"It's different if you can have it through of the week and OK, we're used to running in the warm, but it went from miserable to summer and that was tough on everybody," Amos said. "I was glad when that cloud cover came in, that helped everybody out."
