GCC summer enrollment up slightly over last year

IRONWOOD — The summer semester began Monday at Gogebic Community Community College.

Jean Graham, GCC Dean of students, said enrollment numbers are similar to last year’s summer semester.

She said 10 more students signed up for classes this year, with around 210 students enrolled.

She said the college expanded its summer curriculum, but enrollment numbers prohibited offering some of the classes.

Over the past three years, GCC President Jim Lorenson said the college has been witnessing decreasing enrollment, and it is time to make changes to help balance the budget. The college board recently made adjustments to college staffing and tuition.

The board agreed to increase tuition rates for the upcoming school year, beginning in the fall.

The tuition rate will be increased to $110 per credit hour for in-district students; $156 per credit hour for Michigan out of-district; $156 per credit hour for students in the Wisconsin reciprocity area; $185 per credit hour for out-of-state students, and $260 per credit hour for international students.

Dean of Business Services Erik Guenard said GCC’s tuition rates are competitive with other colleges and universities.
