Mercer rolls out 10th Lupine Junefest

MERCER, Wis. - Mercer held its 10th annual Lupine Junefest on Saturday. Around the area the sun was shining, and the lupine was out in full bloom for the event.

Many bicyclists showed-up to participate in the fundraiser ride. Bikers could choose from a 10-, 26-, 28-, or 50-mile ride along scenic county highways.

The bikers were in for a treat with "beautiful blooming lupines for 13 miles" said Shari Younger member of the Lupine Junefest Organization Committee with the Mercer Chamber of Commerce.

One ride participant, Carol Crowley, rode the 10-mile. She said she brings her granddaughter with her to the event each year. "It's a nice ride" said Crowley. "The neat thing is we do it together with family."

All of the proceeds from the event go to the building of the Great Northern Highlands Trail from Mercer to the Vilas County line. From there, the trail continues on to Sayner. The trail from Mercer south will be completed by this fall.

Younger explained that the event was originally established to raise funds for building the trail. "We couldn't do it without all of the volunteers," said Younger.

As well as the bike rides, there was a classic car show which showcased collectors' Mustangs, Corvettes, Chevrolets and other classic vehicles. Trophies were awarded to the winners.

There was also a silent auction, and multiple booths set-up offering local arts and crafts.

Refreshments were offered, including pulled pork and turkey sandwiches, brats, burgers and homemade muffins.
