IRONWOOD - Women from across the Northwoods learned how to shoot rifles, hand guns, historic firearms, and even throw tomahawks and knives, Saturday at the Superior Range Shooters Club.
The Women on Target event was hosted by the Women of the National Rifle Association.
More than 10 volunteers, including club members, showed 35 women the parts of the gun they were shooting and the proper technique to safely fire it.
Watching a group of women shoot rifles, Gary Sell, club president, said it's important for everyone, not just men, to be able to safely shoot a firearm properly.
"There's nothing wrong with learning how to shoot the right way," he said.
Aiming at her target, Stefanie Prezkop, of Ironwood, fired a rifle 10 times with guidance by club vice president Phillip Blank.
She managed to hit the target once.
"It was fun," she said. "It's something different to do."
Elsewhere on the shooting range, club member John Pera showed Diane Jaski, of Ironwood, how to fire a historic 50-caliber flintlock pistol.
As she fired it, smoke came out of the barrel as the ball traveled toward the target located about 20 yards away.
Pera also showed Jennifer Norden and Michelle Meneguzzo, both of Wakefield, and Linda Nguyen, of Ashland, Wis., how to throw a tomahawk.
He said throwing a tomahawk is like throwing a baseball.
"Step forward, throw and follow through," he said.
Meneguzzo said she had fun throwing and enjoyed shooting rifles and hand guns, too.
