Hurley board approves athletic track repair

HURLEY — The Hurley K-12 Board of Education approved spending money on repairs to the school’s athletic track Monday in an effort to prevent more costly repairs down the road.

“It’s time. It’s time to do something,” said district administrator Chris Patritto. “I hate to see that track get any worse.”

The board approved a $17,050 bid from Angelo Luppino Construction to patch and re-seal the track. It was the lowest of two bids submitted to the district, according to information presented to the board.

Patritto said $11,800 of the costs will be provided by the Hurley Booster Club.

The board also discussed the need to repair the tennis and basketball courts near Veterans Memorial Field, and Patritto will bring cost estimates to the board’s July meeting.

The track repairs will likely take place sometime this summer, according to head of maintenance Bill Trcka.

In other action:

— The board approved purchasing an updated K-8 math curriculum for just under $40,000. According to information presented at the meeting, the price was about half the district expected to spend on the curriculum because the company gave Hurley a discount due to the purchase of a reading curriculum last year. The district last purchased math books approximately 10 years ago.

— The board heard a report on the district’s preliminary budget figures for the upcoming year. According to Patritto, the district will basically have a balanced budget — with both expenses and revenues coming in at roughly $7,202,000 — although these figures could change depending on student enrollment and state aid numbers.

— The board also approved a second reading of several changes to district policies.
