Ironwood house fire extinguished

IRONWOOD — A 12:04 a.m. Thursday structure fire at 140 W. Gogebic St. started in a marijuana grow room.

Ironwood Public Safety Department Fire Officer Brandon Snyder said the fire was electrical in nature.

“Upon arrival, the upstairs was full of smoke and the fire was located inside a wall,” said IPSD Director Andrew DiGiorgio.

The fire was confined to a single room and the attic space above it.

Annieta Grosso was inside the house removing belongings to the porch when an IPSD officer arrived. She was able to safely exit the house.

The fire scene was cleared by 1:40 a.m., but firefighters were called back around 7:30 a.m. when smoke was coming out of the eaves in the attic. They were at the scene until 8:18 a.m. after the second call-out.

An IPSD report said the owner of the house, Jim Bucknell, had insurance.

Officers said there was “moderate” damage to the house.

Five IPSD officers and five volunteer firefighters responded.

It was the second structure fire battled by the department this week, with the other fire occurring in Norrie Location, at 324 E. Oak St.

The unrelated fires remain under investigation.
