Illinois man killed in Oma snowmobile crash

OMA, Wis. — The search for a missing snowmobiler over the weekend ended with discovery of his body Saturday morning in Oma.

The Iron County Sheriff’s Department received reports of a missing snowmobiler Friday night, according to a press release, kicking off a search.

At approximately 10:20 a.m., Saturday department personnel found a snowmobile crash scene on Trail 17 in Oma.

The Illinois man, 45, was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead by Iron County Coroner Diane Simonich, according to Sheriff Tony Furyk.

The man was traveling south on Trail 17 when his machine left the trail and struck several trees, according to Furyk. Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash

The crash remains under investigation by the ICSD and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

The man’s name is being withheld pending the notification of his next of kin.
