Jack Frost parade moves to Saturday

IRONWOOD — Ironwood Chamber of Commerce Director Michael Meyer told the city’s Economic Development Corporation Wednesday why the December Jack Frost parade has been shifted from Friday to Saturday.

Meyer said the primary reason for the change was to create more opportunities for businesses, as the original intent of the downtown December parade was for commercial purposes.

Also, he said a Saturday evening parade will be better for school children and working families who not only want to watch the parade, but also participate in it.

Meyer said planning for the parade will begin after the annual Christmas tree-burning ceremony in Norrie Location at the Norrie Club on Saturday, Jan. 28.

Meyer told the EDC that the Jack Frost committee that oversees the parade operates under the chamber of commerce. The parade is only one of the many Jack Frost Festival events that are scheduled from November through early January in Ironwood, also including the snowmobile races and the Sisu cross country ski races planned for this weekend.

EDC members said the chamber shouldn’t forget the U.S. 2 businesses in planning next December’s parade.

Meyer indicated all businesses in the community are encouraged to participate in the Festival of Lights parade and there may be more commercial tents set up along the route for the 2017 event.
