Watersmeet — This Saturday the Phelps-Land O’ Lakes Lions Club will host its 31st annual Great Northern Ice Fishing Tournament at the West Shore boat landing on Lac Vieux Desert.

The Lions Club expects from 120 to 140 people to compete.

The registration briefing begins at 8 a.m. Historically, about half of the participants register the morning of the event, so people should arrive early.

Ice conditions range from 12 to 15 inches, so organizers urge caution. If possible, people should use all-terrain vehicles, if available, on the ice or at a minimum leave extra space between vehicles on the ice to account for the lack of thickness.

There are two contests: One in the morning from 8 a.m. to noon and another from noon to 4 p.m.

All proceeds from the tournament will fund local charities and public service organizations.

Cash prizes will be awarded for the largest fish caught in five categories: Northern, perch, crappie, bluegill and walleye. An additional prize will be awarded for the largest northern over 36 inches and the largest walleye over 26 inches.

Immediately following the tournament, a dinner will be served at the casino.

Registration is $50 in advance, which includes dinner, and additional guests cost $15.
