Robert J. 'Bob' Smaltz

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Robert J. "Bob" Smaltz, of Ironwood, Mich., passed away peacefully in Milwaukee on Saturday, July 22, 2017, after a long fought battle with Parkinson's Disease.

Bob was born on July 27, 1927, in Ironwood, the son of John and Ann (Hanisko) Smaltz. He attended Ironwood area schools and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean Conflict, returning to the United States to work in the Ironwood A&P store for the majority of his working years. Bob will always be remembered as a kind, generous loving son, brother and uncle who was always there for his family and friends. Those who knew Bob will remember him as an excellent cook and baker, gardener, artistic painter and so much more. Until leaving Ironwood for nursing home care in Milwaukee in 2014, he was devout member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish in Ironwood.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Marjorie (Smaltz) Kavinsky and Anna (Smaltz) Stanich.

Robert is survived by his sister, Mary (Smaltz) Madden and her husband Rich Bland, Atherton, Calif., and Mary's children Todd Madden and his wife Jenny now Bangladesh, and Derk Madden and his wife Connie and their children in Oklahoma. He also is survived by his nieces, Ann (Kavinsky) Saqr, Milwaukee, Sonja Stanich and husband Ken Dunahee and their children, in Waukesha, and Tanya Stanich in New York. Bob will be missed by many relatives and friends.

Cremation will take place and a funeral Mass at Our Lady Queen of Peace will be held on Friday, Aug. 4, at 11 a.m. followed by burial at Riverside Cemetery in Ironwood.
