HurleyHurley School District residents will likely see a small increase in the tax levy for 2017-18, according to district administrator Chris Patritto.

He offered a budget update to the school board at Monday’s regular monthly meeting.

With the district’s annual meeting coming up next month, Patritto said the levy will increase by about $28,000, to $9.56 per $1,000 of valuation, depending on how the final state equalized valuation figures shake out.

Patritto said the district will receive around $200,000 less in overall state aid and it won’t receive as much sparsity aid as previously anticipated, but the negative figures will be offset somewhat by declining enrollment exemptions.

For the current school year, enrollment in all classes is down by 24 students, he said.

Patritto said the Governor’s budget includes per student increases in aid of $200 for 2017-18 and an additional $204 per student for 2019-20.

The per pupil state aid for 2016-17 was $250, so that rises to $450 for the current school year and $654 for 2019-20.

The school district’s tax levy limit will decrease by $185,000, he said.

Patritto said he expects Gov. Scott Walker to veto some portions of the budget pertaining to education.

School district property owners also pay town or city, county, state and vocational school taxes.

In other business Monday, the school board adopted state-required academic standards for the current school year. The standards apply to mathematics, science, English and language arts.
