Donald H. Karvonen

IRONWOOD, Mich. - Donald H. Karvonen, 88, of Ironwood, died peacefully Friday afternoon, Oct. 6, 2017, at Aspirus Ironwood Hospital, with his loving wife by his side.

He was born Dec. 3, 1928, in Ironwood, son of the late John and Vienna (Niskanen) Karvonen, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1946. He worked on ore boats on the Great Lakes for a short time, then was employed at Ahonen Lumber Co., in the Newport Mine, and at White Pine Copper Co., retiring in 1985.

Don was a big Michigan Wolverines and Green Bay Packers fan. He loved gardening and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be dearly missed.

On May 2, 1953, he was married to Virginia Mazzon at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in  Ironwood. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Lynn (Charles) Meister, Duluth, Minn., and Karen (Bill) Salvesen, Wausau, Wis .; four grandchildren, Kristin (Kim Zach) Meister, Superior, Wis., Danny (Laura) Meister, Minneapolis, Minn., Nicole (Travis) Calvert, Muscatine, Iowa, and Danielle Karvonen, Superior; a great-grandson, Aiden Calvert; daughter-in-law, Debbie Karvonen, Superior; brother-in-law, Bob Carlson, Minocqua, Wis .; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Don was predeceased by his son, Jim, on Jan. 27, 2014; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Verene and Tom Gardner, Eugene "Amy" and Mary Mazzon, and Kay Carlson.

Out of respect for his wishes, cremation has taken place.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in Ironwood, with Father Robb Jurkovich officiating.

Rite of Committal and interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.

Luncheon will be served at Manny's upon return from the cemetery.
