Helmi M. Johnson

WAKEFIELD, Mich. — Helmi M. Johnson, 93, a long-time resident of Wakefield, passed away early Sunday morning, Oct. 29, 2017, at Gogebic Medical Care Facility in Wakefield.

Helmi was born on Oct. 5, 1924, in Bessemer Township, a daughter of Victor and Elizabeth (Erkkila) Mattson. She attended A.D. Johnston High School and graduated in 1943.

On June 8, 1946, Helmi married Frederick J. Johnson in Ironwood. They were blessed with seven children.

Helmi is survived by five children, Gary (Pun) Johnson, Midland, Mich., Fern (Gary) Lehto, Portland, Ore., Larry Johnson, Wakefield, Julie (Tony) Genisot, Sherwood, Wis., and Melissa (Jim) Peterson, Ishpeming; 10 grandchildren, Sri Allen, Dolly Johnson, Greg Lehto, Frederick Johnson, Stacy Luther, Allison Kupitz, Daniel Peterson, Derek Peterson, Katie Genisot and Wyatt Genisot; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Frederick, on May 24, 1992; an infant son, Kevin Johnson; a daughter, Doris Stefaniak; an infant granddaughter, Anna Genisot; a sister, Hilda Allen; and four brothers, Walter, Edward, Jacob and John Mattson.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m. at Lakeside Memorial Chapel, 806 Putnam St., in Wakefield.

Interment will take place in Lakeside Cemetery, Wakefield.

The family would like to thank all of Helmi’s caregivers at Gogebic Medical Care Facility for the compassionate and professional care they provided for Helmi over the past two years. Special acknowledgments are given to John and Kathie Allen, who were always there for her.
