Leona Dorothy (Patyk) Sailer

WAKEFIELD, Mich. – Leona Dorothy (Patyk) Sailer, 97, a lifelong resident of Wakefield, passed away peacefully early Thursday morning, Jan. 11, 2018, at her residence, surrounded by her loving family and cherished dog, Lucy.

Leona was born on Sept. 1, 1920, in Wakefield, a daughter of Joseph Harry and Jennie Frances (Budgick) Patyk. She graduated from Wakefield High School.

On Oct. 23, 1950, Leona was united in marriage to Joseph Anthony Sailer.

Leona was a faithful member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Wakefield and a supporting member of the Immaculate Conception Women's Guild. She was a former member of the Daughters of Isabella.

Leona was a sports enthusiast, who was a loyal Detroit Tigers fan and never missed a baseball game. In earlier years, she enjoyed bowling and took pleasure in traveling with her sister, Evelyn.

She worked at Kitche Cumee Coal Company and was a cook at Divine Infant Hospital.

Leona is survived by two daughters, Mary Jo (John) Cain, Ironwood, and Geriann Sailer, Wakefield; 13 grandchildren, Christopher (Lindsey) Cain, Michelle (Travis) Yarger, Melissa (Aaron) Nieman, Jane (Russell) George, Bob Blaskowski, George (Dawn) Sailer, Mike (Shirley) Sailer, Jim (Sue) Sailer, Sandy Sailer, David Sailer, Jason (Heather) Lawson, Ryan Lawson and Eric Karjala; 24 great-grandchildren; her daughter-in-law, Jean (Anthony) Sailer, Owen, Wis .; a sister, Evelyn Mazurek, Royal Oak; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and very special friends, Bill and Jennie Keast.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Joseph, on March 29, 1987; four sons, Joseph Jr., in 1977, Roger, in 1997, Robert, in 2007, and Anthony, in 2015; and a great-granddaughter, Carrie Sailer, in 2015.

Rite of Committal and inurnment will take place in Lakeside Cemetery, Wakefield, in the spring.
