Photography exhibit opening soon

IRONWOOD - The Downtown Art Place invites people to celebrate the Upper Peninsula at its photography exhibition.

The exhibition opens on April 20.

A reception and award ceremony, open to the public, is scheduled for April 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. Some of the photographers will be present and available to meet with the public.

DAP officials are pleased with the "great response" received from photographers across the UP, as well as, the Lower Peninsula, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Tennessee.

There were no geographical restrictions as far as where the photographer came from, as long as the actual photographs submitted represent the U.P. in whatever way the photographer wanted.

There is a wide representation and creative interpretation of life in the U.P. in the exhibition.

From the majesty of nature to everyday life in the U.P., as well as the history of the U.P. and special celebrations, all are captured in film. The area's pristine geography is included, plus a few surprises "that will make you smile," said Polly Barbacovi.

There are more than 30 photographers represented in the exhibit, with 68 images on display.

The Eye of the Lens exhibit will present five monetary awards, including a people's choice award.

The people attending the show will be able to vote for favorite photographs. Peter Skora, from Bayfield, Wis., is the juror for the exhibition.

Peg Sandin is exhibition coordinator. Local businesses, individuals and the Paul Castagna Memorial Fund support the exhibition, which made it possible to offer awards.
