Judith Ann Johnson

IRONWOOD, Mich. — Judith Ann Johnson, 77, loving wife, mother and grandmother, returned to her heavenly home on May 27, 2018, surrounded by family after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Judy was born to Ernest and Alice (Supple) Swanson on Aug. 12, 1940, in Bessemer Township. Judy graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in Ironwood in 1958. She worked for Michigan Bell before starting her family. On Sept. 25, 1971, she married Herbert Johnson at Salem Lutheran Church. They raised two daughters, Jennifer and Stacey.

Judy is survived by her loving, caring husband of 46 years, Herbert, of Ironwood; and daughters, Jennifer, of Duluth, Minn., and Stacey (Richard) Heine, of Hermantown, Minn. Judy adored her three grandchildren, Macie, Madeline and Grace Heine, all of Hermantown. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Jordan (Anita) Segal, of Mt. Prospect, Ill .; and sisters-in-law, Dolores Swanson, Sharon Johnson and Marlene Johnson, all of Ironwood; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Judy and Herb enjoyed the last 25 years of retirement by traveling and spending time with friends. She was an avid reader, enjoyed shopping, cooking, and was a member of the Leelinau Ladies Group. Judy took great pride in being a part of her grandchildren’s activities and lives. Judy was an inspiration to all who knew her and those who crossed paths with her through her cancer treatments.

Judy was preceded in death by her father, Ernest, and her mother, Alice. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Douglas Swanson and his wife, Mary; and her brother, Gordon Swanson; a nephew, Bruce Swanson; and her sister, Marjory (Supple) Ylen. In addition, she was proceeded in death by her brothers-in-law, Donald Johnson and Dennis Johnson; and sisters-in-law, Verna Segal and Judy Johnson, Denny’s first wife.

A celebration of Judy’s life will be held at a later date.
