Irene Rosemarie Groesbeck

WAKEFIELD, Mich. — Irene Rosemarie Groesbeck, age 92, a resident of Wakefield, and formerly of Bessemer and Warren, died Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at the Gogebic Medical Care Facility in Wakefield. Irene was born Oct. 17, 1925, in Cincinnati, Ohio, daughter of the late Francis and the late Elizabeth (Erdy) Welter.

While a teenager, Irene, along with her family, moved to Ferndale. She is a graduate of St. James Catholic High School. Upon graduation, Irene modeled briefly for the Gail and Rice Modeling Agency, worked at her parents’ Mom and Pop grocery store and a local department store.

In 1947 Irene married her late husband, Charles, and they were married for 70 years. Irene was a homemaker, devoted wife and mother. Irene aspired to a career in nursing, but instead devoted many years to the care of her oldest child, Cindy, who was afflicted with juvenile diabetes until her death in 1972. In addition, Irene was also employed seasonally at Richards Children’s Clothing Store in Warren. Irene was an excellent cook and an accomplished poet who authored numerous poems which were published in a collection titled, “This and That.” Irene was a free-spirited individual who enjoyed a diversity of interests including good conversation, music, literature, horseback riding, golf and skeet shooting. She had a love of the outdoors, particularly enjoying the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where she and Charles retired to in 1983 on their 80 acres.

During their retirement years together, they loved to host both family and friends on their slice of paradise.

Irene was predeceased by her husband, Charles; daughter, Cindy, parents, Frank and Elizabeth Welter; brother, Frank and sisters, Marian, Lee and Judy.

She is survived by her sons, Gary (Cindy) Groesbeck and Eugene (Cheryl) Groesbeck; daughter, Kimberlie (Bob) Cedroni; seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and 10 step great-grandchildren.

The family welcomes guests for a memorial visitation, in tribute to Irene, on Friday, June 29, from 3-9 p.m. at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road, at Common (12 1/2 Mile Road) in Warren.

A memorial gathering for Irene will be held on Saturday, June 30, from 9 a.m. until time of the Memorial Mass at 9:30 a.m. at St. Faustina Catholic Church, 14025 E. 12 Mile Road, in Warren.

Irene will be laid to rest at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan, where she will join her beloved, Charles. The date and time of the service remains pending, please check back for updates.
